AC Milan 2 - 3 Manchester United Two second-half goals from in-form Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney installed last season's beaten finalists as favourites to book a place in the Champions League quarter-finals. Not even the concession of a third-minute opener for AC Milan, created by David Beckham for Ronaldinho, could derail Sir Alex Ferguson's troops, although they were forced to endure some nervy moments at the end after Clarence Seedorf hauled Milan back into the tie five minutes from time with an audacious flicked finish. It took a fortunate Paul Scholes effort to bring United level before the break. But after surviving another spell of Milan pressure after half-time, Rooney stamped his class on the contest, scoring his first two European goals of the season to take his overall tally to 25. Sir Alex Ferguson hailed a "fantastic" performance from two-goal Wayne Rooney after Manchester United overcame an early setback to beat AC Milan 3-2 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday night. United were transformed in the second half, and Ferguson knew Rooney would be the key. "The most important thing was better use of the ball and to use Rooney more. I felt he had the beating of them and he was fantastic tonight,'' continued the United boss.

Becks tips Rooney for World Player of Year award. David Beckham is tipping Wayne Rooney to capture the greatest honours in the game later this year. "I hope he is a contender for the World Player of the Year and the Ballon D'Or,'' Beckham said. "I would love to see him win every title possible. I have seen Wayne from being a young lad. I played in his debut for England and I have watched him score goals week in and week out ever since. It is amazing to see.'' "He looks after himself and works hard. The way he plays is the way he trains. That is why he is so good and why Wayne is ready for any game. It doesn't matter how many games he has played or how many he will be involved in to the end of the season, he will be ready for anything.'' "Wayne Rooney is looked upon as a great player in Italy,'' he said. "What Italian people care about is whether forwards are doing the right things and scoring goals. They love people who work hard. That is what they see in Wayne. "I have always felt he is one of the best goalscorers in the world. If he continues the way he is going then Manchester United will be even more successful than they are already.''

Carling Cup Aston Villa 1 - 2 Manchester United Rooney the hero as United overcome Villa Substitute Wayne Rooney was Manchester United's match-winner again, as his second-half header won the Carling Cup for Sir Alex Ferguson's side. James Milner gave Aston Villa a third minute lead, before Michael Owen - who Rooney came on for - netted the equaliser.
